About GECGrahamEq

Mission and Vision

Graham Equestrian Center is an nonprofit educational organization that promotes the joy of horses to a diverse community, regardless of income or ability, through riding and therapeutic horsemanship activities, while preserving the open space of Gunpowder Falls State Park.

The Location

Located just 2 miles north of the Baltimore Beltway, Graham Equestrian Center is easily accessible to everyone in the Baltimore-DC-Philadelphia corridor. It lies within Gunpowder Falls State Park and boasts many trails that wind down to the Big Gunpowder Falls, a favorite recreational area for park hikers, bikers, and riders.

The History

The park is named for Dr. Albert Graham, the original property owner who deeded his farm to Baltimore City with the stipulation that it remain a recreational area and horses remain a part of its activities. After operating the park for a few years, with softball diamonds and picnic areas, Baltimore City sold the area to DNR and it was annexed to the Gunpowder Falls State Park (which the property adjoined). GEC now operates part of the property under DNR’s management. In keeping with his bequest, GEC has filled the 22 stall barn and, in conjunction with a management program developed by the Maryland Department of Agriculture, has rehabilitated nearly 20 acres of pasture for the occupants’ grazing pleasure. Additional improvements include a small barn, two lighted arenas and a round pen for more intensive training, In the future, we hope to add an indoor arena to enable year-round activities.

Board of Directors and Advisory Committee

Because GEC is a nonprofit – the farm is not ‘owned’ by anyone but is managed by a Board of Directors with input from an Advisory Committee. The 2024 BOD and AC Roster can be found here.

The Community

GEC is a premier equine educational facility in the Parkville community in Baltimore County.  We are a Maryland Horse Industry Board Horse Discovery Center and we welcome the public for our educational events. Scout troops and groups participating in community service have taken advantage of our educational program with one-day sessions of basic horsemanship. Our outreach programs, large lesson program, Horse Discovery Days and open house events are all part of our effort to expand the awareness and benefits of equine interaction into our community.
